Public exposure of a leader\u2019s sin is a mercy to him (a severe one, but a mercy nonetheless). The ones who expose him are the ones who say, \u201cI will love you enough to spare you more guilt before God, as much as I can.\u201d Simultaneously this wins some justice for the ones he\u2019s sinned against. This is a little window into the curious relationship between mercy and justice.
