If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and\u00a0the Romans will come and take away both our\u00a0place<\/em> [\u201cTemple\u201d in other translations] and our nation.\u201d\u00a0But one of them,\u00a0Caiaphas,\u00a0who was high priest that year, said to them, \u201cYou know nothing at all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Nor do you understand that\u00a0it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.\u201d\u00a0He did not say this of his own accord, but\u00a0being high priest that year\u00a0he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>and\u00a0not for the nation only, but also\u00a0to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.<\/em> John 11: 48-52<\/p>\n

Being in positional authority, Caiaphas prophesies accurately, but he is a wolf nonetheless. The leaders know they are violating God\u2019s law (or there would not be stealth, plotting and suborning perjury), but they tell themselves their motive is the \u201cneed\u201d \u00a0to protect their Temple, their place in the religious system, and the survival of their nation. And they are pragmatic men.<\/p>\n

It is still a temptation today for leaders choose to sacrifice the well-being of a victim or a whistleblower for the sake of protecting their particular church system. This is not walking in the light. Why would leaders be tempted in this way?<\/p>\n
