….brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.<\/span>\u00a0<\/sup>But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.\u201d Acts 6: 3-4 NASB<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Doesn\u2019t this sound like the apostles proposed that deacons would function in a separate sphere of authority, so that they could better focus on their priorities within their own sphere of authority?<\/p>\n

Under the original Chapel Hill Bible Church bylaws, the deacons were to \u201cassist<\/em> the elders in the administration of the Church but \u201c have the care of<\/em> all matters pertaining to the physical properties and finances of the Church.\u201d [Emphasis added.]This included the development of a budget that met the guidance of the elders for priorities.<\/p>\n

Under the proposed bylaws, deacons no longer have authority over the finances of the church, which is instead now a responsibility of the elders.<\/p>\n

Which set of bylaws seem to follow the example of Scripture more closely?<\/p>\n
