{"id":3132,"date":"2024-06-03T16:52:37","date_gmt":"2024-06-03T16:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chapelhillbiblechurch.org\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2024-06-03T16:53:08","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T16:53:08","slug":"mutual-trust-or-one-way-only","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chapelhillbiblechurch.org\/?p=3132","title":{"rendered":"Mutual trust or one way only?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2839\" src=\"http:\/\/chapelhillbiblechurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dogwood.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/chapelhillbiblechurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dogwood.jpg 415w, https:\/\/chapelhillbiblechurch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/dogwood-300x273.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 415px) 100vw, 415px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are likely familiar with the call to \u201ctrust the elders,\u201d but have you ever thought about trust going two ways and elders \u201ctrusting the congregation?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet in the passage in Acts 6 when the first deacons were chosen, the Apostles themselves trusted the congregation!<\/p>\n<p><em>Now\u00a0at this time, as the\u00a0disciples were\u00a0increasing\u00a0in number, a complaint developed\u00a0on the part of\u00a0the\u00a0Hellenistic\u00a0Jews\u00a0against the\u00a0native\u00a0Hebrews, because their\u00a0widows were being overlooked in\u00a0the daily serving\u00a0of food.\u00a0So the twelve summoned the\u00a0congregation of the disciples and said, \u201cIt is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.\u00a0<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Instead,\u00a0brothers\u00a0and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation,\u00a0full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.\u00a0But we will\u00a0devote ourselves to prayer and to the\u00a0ministry of the word.\u201d<strong><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The announcement found approval with [alternate: &#8220;pleased&#8217;] the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch. And they brought these men before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
