When unity is an idol

In dysfunctional churches that enable abuse, unity is an idol, where unity trumps truth telling. This explains the scapegoating of the truth teller. -Keith Ford @LarrySnodgrass1 on X (Twitter.com) March 24, 2024 Unity as idol

But, many will reply, what about the Scripture that tells us to “maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace?”1  How can unity be an idol?

In response, consider the words of Jesus: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth?”2 How can there be unity of the Spirit when truth is hidden?

Or the teaching later in the same chapter of Ephesians:  “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ “3. Christ is the Truth. How can unity be maintained without Truth? “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”4

“Unity” without truth is whitewash.
